Data Dictionary, Transportation and Urban Design Map

Cyclists/Pedestrians Motor Vehicle Collisions, 2009 - 2014 (Manitoba Public Insurance):     The number of collisions between cyclists/pedestrians and motor vehicles in the years 2009 - 2014 reported to Manitoba Public Insurance.   These data were obtained by CBC News (Manitoba)  directly from Manitoba Public Insurance and were used to prepare the story Winnipeg's Most Dangerous Intersection for Cyclists (Sept. 19, 2016).    Collisions illustrated on the map represent only 65% of all cyclists/pedestrian collisions that occurred in 2009-2014 (as precise intersection information was missing for 35% of collisions).

Walkability 2015:
   Walkability is a measure of how how well a community promotes active forms of transportation, such as walking as opposed to inactive forms of transportation such as driving a car.   A highly walkable community has a wide variety of destinations within walking distance, a well connected street network with sidewalks, and usually a high population density.

The Walkability index for the Winnipeg Health Region was calculated by combining the following inputs:
  • the 2011 residential population;
  • the density of amenities (stores, restaurants, commercial establishments and services)
  • the density of street intersections with 4 or more incoming roads
The three inputs were calculated at the dissemination block level (n=5500 in the Winnipeg Health Region) and equally weighted and combined into a composite walkability score using z-scoring.
