Median Household Income, 2015
Layer Name: Before Tax Median Household Income, 2015
Maps using this layer: Winnipeg Health Region Community Map; Manitoba Community Map
Spatial Unit: Dissemination Area
Source: 2016 Census
Method of Calculation: 2015 Taxfiler (income Tax) data was used to estimate the before tax median household income for each dissemination area. Median household income refers to the income level earned by a given household where half of the homes in the area earn more and half earn less. Low-income cutoffs are based on the Stats Canada Low Income Measure After Tax (LIM-AT) definition. Approximate cut-offs using this definition are: 1 person: 22,133; 2 persons: 31,301; 3 persons: 38,335; 4 persons: 44,266; 5 persons: 49,491; 6 persons: 54,215; 7 persons: 58,558
Things to Consider When Using this Layer:

Things to Consider When Using this Layer:
- The 2016 Census tends to under-count the actual population by about 3% overall. This is a greater problem in low-income populations in the Winnipeg Health Region, where the under-count may be as great as 10%.
- There are a number of First Nation communities in rural Manitoba that did not participate in the 2016 Census. Click here for a list of those communities that did not participate
- Data provided by the 2016 Census for small geographic areas are often rounded up or down to the nearest 5 or 10 in order to protect the confidentiality of respondents. As a result, counts for reported sub-populations or categories may not always add up to 100%.
- Median Household Income. Median household income refers to the income level earned by a given household where half of the homes in the area earn more and half earn less. It's used instead of the average or mean household income because it can give a more accurate picture of an area's actual economic status.
- Income Quintile. Income quintiles are calculated by first ranking dissemination areas in Manitoba from low to high by median household income using the 2016 Census. Income quintiles are then created by dividing the population into five equal categories so that each category contains 20% of the total Mb. population. Income Quintile 1 contains the 20% of the Mb. population living in the lowest median income dissemination areas, while Income Quintile 5 contains the 20% of the Mb. population living in the highest median income dissemination areas. The method used here varies slightly from the method used traditionally by the Manitoba Center for Health Policy which has traditionally used average family income as the ranking variable to calculate separate income quintiles for urban (Winnipeg and Brandon) and rural Manitoba.

Spatial Unit: Dissemination Area
Source: 2016 Census
Method of Calculation:
Maps using this layer: Winnipeg Health Region Community Map; Manitoba Community Map
Spatial Unit: Dissemination Area
Source: 2016 Census
Method of Calculation:
- The proportion of the population reporting North American Aboriginal origins, expressed as a percentage.
- Aboriginal ancestry' refers to whether a person has ancestry associated with the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, that is, First Nations (North American Indian), Métis, and Inuit. Aboriginal peoples of Canada are defined in the Constitution Act, 1982, Section 35 (2) as including the Indian, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada. Ancestry refers to the ethnic or cultural origins of the person's ancestors, an ancestor being usually more distant than a grandparent. A person can have more than one ethnic or cultural origin.
- Information on Aboriginal ancestry is collected in Question 17: Ethnic origin. In Question 17, respondents were asked to specify as many origins (ancestries) as applicable. Four lines were provided for write-in responses and up to six ethnic origins (ancestries) were retained. Aboriginal ancestry responses can be presented in different ways.
- The 2016 Census tends to under-count the actual population by about 3% overall. This is a greater problem in low-income populations in the Winnipeg Health Region, where the under-count may be as great as 10%.

Maps using this layer: Winnipeg Community Map only (see rationale below)

Source: 2016 Census
Method of Calculation:
- The proportion of the population (reported as a %) reporting that they are recent immigrants, that is they have been granted landed immigrant status between 2011 and 2016.
- Year of immigration' refers to the year in which the immigrant first obtained landed immigrant or permanent resident status
- Immigrant' includes persons who are, or who have ever been, landed immigrants or permanent residents. Such persons have been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by immigration authorities. Immigrants who have obtained Canadian citizenship by naturalization are included in this category. In the 2016 Census of Population, 'Immigrant' includes immigrants who landed in Canada on or prior to May 10, 2016.
- Non-permanent resident' includes persons from another country who have a work or study permit or who are refugee claimants, and their family members sharing the same permit and living in Canada with them
- The 2016 Census tends to under-count the actual population by about 3% overall. This is a greater problem in low-income populations in the Winnipeg Health Region, where the under-count may be as great as 10%.
- There are a number of First Nation communities in rural Manitoba that did not participate in the 2016 Census. Click here for a list of those communities that did not participate

- Rural estimates Recent Immigrants have not been generated and authored into the Manitoba Community Map because recent immigrant data in northern Manitoba has been suppressed. According to Statistics Canada, areas (CSDs and areas below CSDs, and CDs as needed) with a large number of persons living in Indian reserves and settlements have their data suppressed for citizenship and immigration data. This is because these persons are enumerated with the 2A-R questionnaire that does not contain the questions on citizenship or immigration. All the CSDs in Manitoba Division 22 are reserves or settlements except for the City of Thompson. Citizenship and immigration data for the City of Thompson is suppressed to prevent residual disclosure, partly because of the other CSDs, and partly because of the individual DA or DAs in it that are suppressed for the same data points.

Method of Calculation:
- The proportion of households living in unsuitable housing.
- Housing suitability refers to whether a private household is living in suitable accommodations according to the National Occupancy Standard (NOS); that is, whether the dwelling has enough bedrooms for the size and composition of the household. A household is deemed to be living in suitable accommodations if its dwelling has enough bedrooms, as calculated using the NOS.
- Housing suitability' assesses the required number of bedrooms for a household based on the age, sex, and relationships among household members. An alternative variable, 'persons per room,' considers all rooms in a private dwelling and the number of household members.
- Housing suitability and the National Occupancy Standard (NOS) on which it is based were developed by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) through consultations with provincial housing agencies.

Denominator: All residents aged 19 years and older during the study period.
Calculation: Prevalence was age– and sex–adjusted to the Manitoba population aged 19 years and older in the first time period (i.e., 2004/05–2006/07 Manitoba population as the standard population for 2004/05–2006/07 and 2009/10– 2011/12; 1998/99-2000/01 Manitoba population as the standard population for 1998/99-2000/01 and 2003/04-2005/06).
Diabetes Incidence
Definition: Incidence is expressed as the number of new cases of diabetes found during a specific period of time (e.g., over 1-year, 2-year or 5-year span) divided by the amount of time contributed by persons at risk of developing diabetes. Specifically, it is the average number of new cases of diabetes (Type 1 and 2 combined) in residents aged 19 years and older per 100 person–years at risk as defined by either:

Calculation: Life expectancy was calculated directly from the mortality experience of residents using the “life table” approach.
Things to Consider When Using this Layer:
- Life expectancy is a measure of how long on average a population is expected to live from birth if current conditions persist into the future ... that is, if they live every year of their life under the conditions of the current year. It is not, therefore, a realistic measure of how long people will actually live from birth, but is rather a measure that can be used to compare the relative health and longevity of populations.

Definition: The rate of deaths in residents under 75 years per 1,000 residents per year.
Numerator: Number of deaths before age 75 (= premature deaths) in a given year.
DENOMINATOR: Number of residents under age 75 as of December 31 of the year.
Calculation: Average annual rates were calculated using data of a 5-year period and were age- and sex-adjusted to the Manitoba population under 75 years old in the first time period (i.e., 2002-2006 Manitoba population as the standard population for 2002-2006 and 2007-2011 rates; 1996-2000 Manitoba population as the standard population for 1996- 2000 and 2001-2005 rates). Note: 2001-2005 data is not reported in the trend chart as it overlaps with the 2002-2006 data.

Things to Consider When Using this Layer:
- The premature mortality rate is considered the best single indicator of the overall health status of a region’s population and need for healthcare (Carstairs & Morris, 1991; Eyles & Birch, 1993; Eyles, Birch, Chambers, Hurley, & Hutchison, 1991). PMR is correlated with morbidity and with self–rated health, as well as with socioeconomic indicators (Martens, Frohlich, Carriere, Derksen, & Brownell, 2002a). Populations having a high PMR are presumed to need more healthcare services than healthier populations.

Definition: The number of dental extractions performed on residents under age 6 years. Dental extractions are referred to as a hospital-based procedure for removing teeth of young children with severe tooth decay and requiring the use of anesthesia beyond levels available in a dentist’s office (i.e., general anesthesia). Out–of–province procedures were excluded.
Numerator: Number of dental extractions performed on residents under age 6.
Denominator: The Region’s residents under age 6 as of December 31 of each year (2002–2011).
Calculation: (Number of dental extractions performed on the Region’s residents under 6 years of age / Number of the Region’s residents under 6 years of age)×1,000. Crude annual proportions were calculated for 2002/03–2006/07 and 2007/08–2011/12.

Method of Calculation:
Maps using this layer: Winnipeg Health Region Community Map;
Spatial Unit: Dissemination Area
Source: 2016 Census
Method of Calculation:
- The proportion of commuters using public transit (bus) to get to work in May, 2016.
- This data was collected in May, 2016, and therefore represents the mode of transportation used at that time of year.
- Users should be aware that the estimates associated with this variable are more affected than most by the incomplete enumeration of certain Indian reserves and Indian settlements in the Census of Population.
- Data provided by the 2016 Census for small geographic areas are often rounded up or down to the nearest 5 or 10 in order to protect the confidentiality of respondents. As a result, counts for reported sub-populations or categories may not always add up to 100%.
